The crisis in Greece has led to creative solutions to lower food prices, as direct sales between producers and consumers remove excess profits from middlemen.
Direct sales to lower food prices is being set up in Greece with hopes of building a network at a European level.
Direct sales between producers and consumers have bypassed middlemen, selling at unbeatable prices to benefit local producers and consumers.
Flour producers sold their product at € 0.50 per kilo and success was immediate with consumers who were paying € 1.20 in supermarkets. While current prices were € 0.70 per kilo of
potatoes in supermarkets, growers sold their potatoes € 0.29 per kilo. Many supermarkets followed to align the price. Rice farmers and producers of olives are looking to join this movement for direct sales.
Given the success with consumers, the organizers would like to extend it to all Europe. They report to have made ??contact with producer organizations in France and Spain.
