The Southampton Almeria line is gaining importance
FJ
Called The Maritime Solution, the new line will allow to save time of transport and reduce the number of trucks in circulation.
The new "Almeria Southampton Fresh Line", arranged by Southampton Fruits Handling, is an alternative to road transport. The line allows you to send directly to Southampton fruit and vegetables produced in Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, thereby reducing the movement of trucks and avoiding emissions of greenhouse gases.
The supermarket chain Asda, which is buying bananas in the Caribbean, tested the line with bananas from the Canary Islands. The results are significant and the time savings was huge.
The new line promises a bright future. Almeria produces over 3 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables each year, 70% of which is shipped by truck across Europe.
