While the new crop has not yet reached the market, the Indian government has decided to import onions to cope with the shortage and combat rising prices.
The increase in prices at the wholesale and retail level is the result of low onion production in the southern Indian states where they are grown. To stem the rise in prices, the government banned the export of onions and imposed stock limits on traders.
In addition, the Indian government has just decided to import onions. A state-owned company has called for tenders to import 2,000 tonnes of onions by the end of October with a price cap of $ 352 per tonne.
Harvesting 'Kharif' or monsoon harvest has not yet reached the market.
