NEPG predicts a record harvest
The NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers - Producers of potatoes Northwest European) predicts a harvest in 2014 which could reach a new record, beyond the 2011 production (26.8 million tonnes).
The production of potatoes could rise to 27 million tonnes within 5 NEPG countries (Germany, Belgium, Britain, France, the Netherlands). Production of NEPG would be in rise of +12.1% compared to the last year and +10.5% higher than the average production over the last 5 years.
The main reasons are an increase of +3.1% of sown areas and +8.7% rise of yield/hectare. The surfaces of potatoes represent now 548,475 hectares across 5 countries. This increase of surfaces is particularly marked in Belgium, with a rise of +6.5% in one year (+11.6% compared to the 5-year average).
