This shift to sea freight should improve the competitiveness of Kenyan products (avocados, mangoes, vegetables...) and export larger volumes to Europe and other markets (Photo: facebook/people/ Kenyan-Avocado-Mango-Tea-Exporters).
According to local media, Kenya plans to shift 50% of its horticultural exports from air freight to sea freight.
This objective is part of a five-year program estimated at KES 3.8 billion (USD 27.5 million) and implemented by TradeMark Africa. The program is called BEEP for business and export environment improvement program.
The program will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint but also the costs for exporters. The Kenya Fresh Produce Consortium estimates that sea freight costs should represent a 40-50% decrease compared to what exporters spend on air transport.
This shift towards maritime freight should make it possible to improve the competitiveness of Kenyan products (avocados, mangoes, vegetables, etc.) and to export greater volumes to Europe and other markets.
