EU countries are still importing more fruits and vegetables from developing countries (+ 7%) while the trend is exactly the opposite for their exports (-15%).
The trend observed in recent years is confirmed by recent Eurostat data. The volume of Fruits & Vegetables imports from developing countries is still higher.
According to Eurostat data, the EU imported 7% more fresh fruit and vegetables from developing countries by volume in 2018 than in the previous year. These imports reached 16.6 million tonnes.
Imports into the EU of fresh vegetables from developing countries increased by 7% in volume, with 2.3 million tonnes. Tomatoes top the list with 628,067 tonnes (+ 10%), followed by potatoes with 362,440 tonnes (-16%), peppers with 261,904 tonnes (+ 14%) and onions with 289,463 tonnes ( + 18%).
For fruit, imports from developing countries also increased by 7% in volume. Banana imports totaled more than 5.9 million tonnes, pineapple and orange more than 1 million tonnes.
This upward trend contrasts with the downward trend of EU exports to developing countries. In 2018, the EU sold 15% less fruit and vegetables to developing states,, with a total volume of 5.4 million tonnes.
