While pulse prices in recent months have reached record levels in the Turkish domestic market, the president of the Mediterranean Union of Pulse Exporters has announced an increase in the harvest of red lentils, 85% of which is produced in south- East Turkey.
In 2016, Turkey produced 244 000 tons and imported 338 000 tons of red lentils. The first harvest forecast was 330 000 tons but has been revised upwards and production is expected to reach around 380 000 tons. The yield per decare varies from one region to another, from 130 to 190 kilos. Rainfall plays an important role in this figure and the next few weeks will be decisive.
President Mahmut Arslan added that in the first 5 months of the year the pulse markets were further diversified and 17 new markets were opened to Turkish products to reach a total of 164 importing countries. With an increase of 9% in exports of these products during this period, Turkey ranks third among the G20 countries with the fastest development in the first quarter of 2017.
