Tomatoes produced in the Kano region take the train to Lagos, the capital of the country.
Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, can be supplied with fresh tomatoes from Kano (834 km further north) thanks to a rail link.
This is the first time in more than 50 years that a rail link is installed to transport tomatoes. As a result of public-private coordination, the service will operate on a weekly basis. The operators think they can extend it to other products.
Nigeria is the 2nd largest producer of tomatoes in Africa and the 13th in the world according to a ranking established by FAO. But the country lost 2.8 million tonnes of tomatoes in 2016 due to poor storage facilities and poor transport infrastructure.
