Alarming Water Shortage Threatens Agricultural Crops In Turkey
MLK
The water level hits the lowest level for the last 30 years. Farmers are worrying about the aridity.
Most of the dams in this region were built for the purpose of irrigation. Zernek dam, which is one of the biggest dam of the region, has an capacity of 105 million m3 but now it is barely storing 20 % of its capacity. According to the President of Irrigation Union, it’s the first time that water levels decrease this way since 1985, date of foundation of the dam.
Right now the dam gates are closed for the irrigation on agricultural crops. The President of Irrigation Union adds that if this goes on, next year there will be major problems on crops production.
