In Australia, drought and bush fires are the main culprits for the reduced supply of certain vegetables and significantly higher prices than normal.
For AUSVEG, the rising prices for certain vegetables are linked to the impacts of drought, bush fires and weather events in the producing regions. The supply is much lower for certain products, and the prices are high, especially for celery, cauliflower and broccoli. The price of a kilo of broccoli has reached AUD 11.50 (USD 6.97 ).
This lower supply has resulted in higher prices because the vast majority of the fresh produce available in Australia is grown locally. Professionals believe that the availability of fresh products will rapidly increase, especially since supermarkets have relaxed their specifications regarding the size and appearance of products, in order to increase the supply.
