India imports onions from Egypt
FJ
Egyptian onions will help India to fight against soaring of prices.
For the first time in 20 years, India has started to import onions from Egypt. These Egyptian onions are sold from 10 to 15 rupees per kilo while Indian onions actually cost 60 rupees per kilo to consumers. Inflation on the price of Indian onions between August 2012 and August 2013 reached +245%.
India is one of the largest onion producers in the world and generally also a net exporter of onions. But drought in major producing regions (Maharashtra, Karnataka) caused a shortage that has pushed up prices. The next harvest is awaited impatiently.
