Japan is the 2nd largest market for Australia's agricultural exports.
Since the end of May the Australian Hass avocado can be exported to Japan, though the fruit comes from specific producing regions in Australia.
On May 23rd, the Australian Ministry of Agriculture said access to Japan was officially open for Hass avocados in the country. Provided that these avocados come from areas recognized as being free from Queensland fruit fly, that is to say only from producing areas in Western Australia, Riverland (South Australia) and Tasmania.
The Ministry of Agriculture reports that avocado production totaled 66,000 tonnes in 2016-17. The main variety cultivated in Australia is the Hass variety with more than 80% of the production, followed by the Shepard variety with 10 to 15%. Over the same period 2016-17 avocado exports reached only 2,300 tons. The opening of a new market will therefore make it possible to increase volumes shipped.
