French production of melons should increase by 5% despite a slight drop in surfaces.
Increased production of melons is expected in France despite a slight drop in areas planted.
Agreste, a service of the Ministry of Agriculture, anticipates 2012 production will be higher than last year. Agreste estimates domestic production at 283,500 tons, up 5%. Surfaces however are down 1% to 14,600
ha.
Rain and cold, have shifted the timetable for producing by 2 to 3 weeks. The first French melons come from the Southeast and demand is low without summer heat. Volumes are expected to come in July.
