The heat wave that the province of Huelva (Spain) suffered this May caused an acceleration in the ripening of strawberries, according to the manager of Freshuelva (Association of Strawberry Producers and Exporters from Huelva), Rafael Domínguez.
This means that not all the fruit will be able to reach international markets. The manager specified that around 30% of this fruit will go to the industry, for the production of juices, purées, yogurts, frozen foods and ice creams or for the internal market.
Domínguez pointed out that the end of the season is expected in mid-June, but it also depends on the market situation and what fruit is in demand, because other fruits such as peaches, nectarines or cherries have also accelerated with heat and cause competition.
On the other hand, although at the beginning it was expected that the total volume of production and marketing would reach 280,000 - 290,000 tons (the same as last year), there could be some variation for the reasons stated.
Finally, he highlighted that the last berry season to end is that of blueberries, which was also accelerated by the heat wave, which provoced increase in volume and drop in price. The blueberry season is projected to end in early July or move up a week.
