These crayons made from natural ingredients made in the Philippines are very popular in Japan (Photo: JICA).
In the Philippines an aid organization for the disabled (PWD Association of New Lucena Iloilo), with the help of a Japanese volunteer from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was able to set up a small pencil- Natural ingredients deriving from fruits and vegetables.
The 26 members of the group, with the training received from the Japanese volunteer, learned how to melt the ingredients, extract the pigments, mold the pencils and pack them in boxes. Each box contains 10 different colored pencils extracted from papaya pigments, dragon fruit, tamarind, squash, mango, carrot, purple yam and bamboo.
The boxes are shipped and marketed in Japan. With success exceeding expectations, the organization in the Philippines would now like to continue expanding it, with the support of Japanese crayons makers and a growing number of locally trained people.
