Decentralized corn production strengthens rural economies.
In 2024, Peru produced more than 853,700 tons of corn, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri). Of the total, 80% was dry grain, 19% was corn on the cob (choclo), and 1% was purple corn.
The regions with the highest production of dry grain were Cusco, Apurímac, Huancavelica, and Cajamarca. For choclo, the leading regions were Junín, Áncash, Cusco, and Cajamarca. This outlook reflects strong agricultural activity across different parts of the country, with decentralized production that supports rural economies.
Currently, more than 239,000 corn producers are registered in the Agricultural Producers Registry, highlighting the crop's importance in family farming and its contribution to national food security.
