These imposed tariffs should drive up prices for US consumers.
US President Donald Trump announced that products from Mexico would be subject to a 5% tariff from June 10. These customs duties would then increase to 10% from 1 July, 15% from 1 August, 20% from 1 September, and 25% from 1 October 2019.
Rates will be kept at a permanent level of 25% if Mexico fails to take effective measures to significantly reduce the number of illegal migrants crossing its territory to the United States.
According to the White House press release, workers arriving in the United States as part of the legal admission process, including those working on farms, ranches and other businesses, will be allowed to pass easily.
