From the beginning of the current season (March) to July 4, Peru exported 54.000 tons of fresh mandarins, which is 3.6% less than the 56.000 tons shipped in the same period of the 2021 season, according to the president of the consulting firm Inform@cción, Fernando Cillóniz Benavides.
The behavior of these exports was as follows: 900.000 kilos in March, 8.084.025 kilos in April, 12.320.029 kilos in May, 28.293.784 kilos in June, and 4.447.376 kilos in July until day 4.
It is important that exports of satsuma mandarins whose season has already ended (March-June) totaled 29.000 tons, registering a decrease of 12.1% compared to the 33.000 tons exported in the same period of the previous season.
Satsuma mandarin shipments in the 2022 campaign totaled 2.300.000 kilos in March, 7.549.893 kilos in April, 15.982.911 kilos in May, and 3.286.329 kilos in June.
According to Cillóniz, satsuma used to have a very large share in Peru's early mandarins exports, but in recent years it has lost weight compared to seedless varieties such as Tango.
As for tangelos, he specified that their season began in June and will end in August, and added that in June 2022, 2.930.520 kilos were shipped compared to 4.810.590 kilos sent in the same month last year (-44%). Worth noticing that in June 2020, 5.709.759 kilos were exported.
Fernando Cillóniz concluded that Peru is already leaving the tangelo business, without seeing possibilities of recovering.
