In 2020, Spain and Mexico became the main exporters of cucumbers and pickles in the world, according to Eurostat and the Secretary of Economy of Mexico
Spain achieved placements of cucumbers and pickles for $743 million in the previous year, an increase of 9.6 % compared to 2019.
Mexico exported cucumbers and pickles for a customs value of $648 million, an increase of 14.7 % year-on-year.
Almost all Mexican cucumber deliveries (98.8 %) went to the United States, the world's leading importer of cucumbers, while the rest basically went to Canada.
Together, Mexico and Spain account for around 47 % of all external sales of pickles and cucumbers in the world.
Other large global exporters of cucumbers were China, the United States, Canada and the Netherlands.
Today, cucumber is widely grown in North America and Europe and ranks fourth in global vegetable production, after tomatoes, cabbage, and onions.
Cucumber is of origin from the tropical areas of South Asia. This cultivation has been carried out in India for more than 3000 years.
Over time it became popular in Rome and Greece, who introduced it to the rest of Europe.
