The Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences on consumption did not halt the increase in sales of organic products in France. The growth recorded was + 63% then + 49% and + 22% over 3 consecutive weeks.
In 2019, sales of organic products in supermarkets increased by 19%. But for the weeks since lockdown, growth rates have soared.
According to Nielsen data, for the week of March 15, sales of organic products increased by + 63% (conventional products + 40%). For the week of March 22, the increase was + 49% for organic (conventional products + 31%). For the week of March 29, the increase was + 22% in organic (conventional products + 5%).
Another observation, purchases in specialized organic stores (Biocoop, Naturalia, La Vie Claire, Bio C ’Bon, Naturéo ...) are growing. Containment has forced the French to make more purchases in convenience stores and these brands have a good territorial network.
Finally, the value of the average basket has also increased, from around € 40 to € 59 since mid-March, or almost + 48%, according to details by Alexandre Fantuz, marketing director of Biotopia.
