Polish production accounted for 34% of EU production, but next season its volumes will be much lower.
The damage caused by spring frosts combined with the effects of a year of rest for the trees leads to a forecast of a minimum harvest this year.
Poland was affected by a freeze wave in the spring (see news of 23.04). The damage estimate was difficult to establish instantly but now the effects are clearly noticeable. According to information from the Fruit Growers Association, the harvest of apples will be considerably lower than last season but may also be below the multi-year average.
The largest losses are for cherries and apples. Polish apple production reached 3.14 million tonnes for 2015-16, 3.5 million tonnes for 2016-17, 2.7 million tonnes for 2017-18 and 4.3 million tonnes for 2018-19.
