Imported volumes of citrus fruits should remain stable for this 2020/21 season

In South Korea, the total volume of citrus fruit production is expected to increase by 4.5% for this 2020/21 season. The volume of citrus imports is expected to be roughly similar to the previous season.
According to a recent FAS GAIN report by USDA, the US Department of Agriculture, total citrus production in South Korea for MY 2020/21 (October-September) is expected to reach 660,000 tonnes. That is + 4.5% compared to the volume of the previous campaign. This increase is attributed to favorable weather conditions in the production areas.
For this 2020/21 marketing year, imports of fresh oranges are expected to reach 115,000 tonnes, almost similar to the 115,783 tonnes imported during the previous season. During the 2019/20 season, South Korea imported 107,410 tonnes of oranges from the United States, 240 tonnes from Spain and 5,051 tonnes from Australia.
Imports of lemons are expected to reach 19,500 tonnes, almost similar to the 19,274 tonnes imported in the previous season. In the 2019/20 campaign, the United States was also the main supplier with a share of 76%, followed by Chile with a share of 24%.
Imports of grapefruits are expected to remain around 16,000 tonnes. During the previous season grapefruit imports reached 16,158 tonnes. Here again, the United States was the main supplier with a share of 67.3%, well ahead of South Africa with 22.6% and Israel with 10%.
South Korea, for this marketing year 2020/21, has a total area planted with citrus fruits of about 20,000 hectares, or -0.29% compared to the previous season.
