Thailand to increase imports to avoid shortages
MD
With the worst flooding in its history engulfing much of the country, Thailand will increase its imports to avoid shortages.
The heavy rains of the monsoon have led to the largest floods the country has known. The economic system has been completely disrupted with production stopped, distribution paralysed, and storage warehouses flooded.
The authorities have decided to facilitate imports of drinking water and food to avoid shortages. Priority has been given to milk, eggs, canned food, instant food and fresh vegetables.
The majority of hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores are running out of stable products, including water. Tesco Lotus had to close 10% of its 800 stores. 7-Eleven has had many stores destroyed and needed to close 270 stores due to lack of supply.
