Despite high demand, Spain and the EU face challenges in accessing the US market.
In 2023, Spain exported fruits and vegetables to the United States for a value of 85 million euros, a 2% decrease compared to the previous year, with a volume of 27,103 tons, representing an 18% drop. The trend has been downward over the past five years, declining from 36,328 tons in 2019 to 27,103 in 2023.
Garlic led Spanish exports with 18,801 tons and 67.5 million euros, followed by cucumber (1,878 tons, 3.7 million euros), onion (1,763 tons, 1.5 million euros), potato (1,099 tons, 2.1 million euros) and mandarin (1,023 tons, 1.1 million euros).
Regarding the EU, exports to the United States in 2023 reached 72,688 tons, 13% less than the previous year, and totaled 198 million euros (-9%). The main products include kiwi (33,446 tons and 63 million euros) and garlic (18,884 tons and 67.6 million euros).
Experts point out that exports are limited due to the need for phytosanitary protocols approved by the U.S., delaying the market opening for products from Spain and other EU countries.
