Chinese pears make first official entry into Argentine market

A 17.5-tonne shipment of Chinese pears arrives in Buenos Aires.
In a notable development for bilateral trade, Argentina has received its first-ever shipment of fresh Chinese pears. A total of 17.5 tonnes of Crown variety pears recently arrived at the Buenos Aires Central Market and are already available for sale — marking China’s debut as a fresh fruit supplier to the Argentine market.
The imported pears are being sold at approximately ARS 45,000 (approx. USD $35) per box (about ARS 4,500 or USD $3.50 per kilo), significantly above the price point of locally grown pears.
While the move diversifies consumer options, it has also raised concerns among local growers. Industry representatives have pointed to asymmetrical trade conditions, noting that it remains more difficult for Argentine exporters to access the Chinese market than vice versa.
This first shipment forms part of China’s broader strategy to increase agricultural exports to Latin America. As the trade relationship evolves, both countries face the challenge of ensuring greater market reciprocity and fairness — balancing increased import variety with competitive conditions for domestic producers.
