Lemons : World production in 2023/24 to rise by 225,000 tonnes

World production of lemons and limes in 2023/24 is forecast to rise by 225,000 tonnes. Higher production in the European Union, South Africa and Turkey should more than offset lower production in Mexico and the United States.

 

According to a FAS (Foreign Agricultural Service) report issued by the USDA, the US Department of Agriculture, world production of lemons and limes in 2023/24 is set to rise by 225,000 tonnes to 10.0 million tonnes. 

 

 

Increasing production 

 

Turkey: production is expected to increase by 264,000 tonnes to a record 1.6 million tonnes due to favourable weather conditions and higher yields. 

 

South Africa: production expected to rise by 10% to 720,000 tonnes due to favourable weather conditions. 

 

Argentina: production expected to rise by 3% to 1.9 million tonnes, due to favourable weather conditions. 

 

European Union: production expected to rise by 16% to 1.7 million tonnes. 

 

Chile: production is set to increase by 11,000 tonnes to 175,000 tonnes, thanks to larger areas and higher yields.

 

 

Lower production 

 

Mexico: production is set to fall by 5% to 3 million tonnes. Lime production is also expected to fall in the states of Michoacan and Colima.

 

United States: production is expected to fall by 254,000 tonnes to 758,000 tonnes due to unfavourable weather conditions in California.Mexico: production is set to fall by 5% to 3 million tonnes. Lime production is also expected to fall in the states of Michoacan and Colima.
