Brazil remains the main buyer of pears and apples in the region.
From January to June 2024, Argentina's National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (Senasa) certified the export of more than 87,000 tonnes of pears and apples to Brazil from the provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén. Of these, 75,261 tonnes were pears and 12,321 tonnes were apples.
Brazil, the main importer, demands high health and quality standards. The absence of carpocapsa, a common pest, in Brazil has led to the implementation of rigorous control procedures. These are part of the Work Plan for export under the Risk Mitigation System (SMR).
The SMR includes controls from production to packing and dispatch, supervised by Senasa's Northern Patagonia Regional Centre. The fruit is inspected by Brazilian authorities at border crossings, with only one case of carpocapsa detected this year, within the permitted tolerance.
This sanitary strategy is the result of a joint effort between the public and private sectors, guaranteeing the quality and continuity of fruit trade with Brazil.
