Fruit and vegetable exports to Russia will be controlled from now on only by Moldovan authorities without monitoring by Russian experts, according to an agreement between the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and Russian Phytosanitary Quarantine Service signed at Moscow on Wednesday.
The document stipulates that the monitoring of exports to the Russian market is entrusted to experts of Moldovan Quarantine Service.
Russian experts monitored exports during March 6-April 6, 2007. During this period, approximately 2.600 tons of apples, 57 tons of grapes, 580 tons of tobacco, and 220 tons of sunflower were exported to Russia. The supplies were carried out via Briceni customs point.
Traditionally, the Russian Federation is the main country for trading Moldovan products. More than 80% of apples, 93% of pears, 61% of peaches and 71% of apricots were exported from Moldova to Russian on average per year. The losses borne by Moldovan producers as a result of the bans imposed by Russia were estimated to US$11-12 million.
