Argentina is faced with a difficult problem: the cost of production has increased by 100% while fruit prices rose by 35-50%
The production of pears and apples in Argentina is faced with a problem.
The director of the CAFI (Cámara Argentina de Fruticultores Integrados) notes that since 2007 "the costs measured in dollars rose by 100% while international fruit prices increased between 35 and 50%, depending on the variety."
The CAFI, representing 65% of exports of apples and pears in the country, prepared a report that analyzes the production costs. The ascertained increases are classical and observed in many other countries: prices of workforce, packaging prices, fertilizer prices, transport prices, fuel prices.
This problematic situation should push the industry to look for new tracks for regaining competitiveness. Argentina is a world leader in exports of pears, with 440,000 tonnes (18.5% of the export market) and third producer with more than 800,000 tonnes.
