The EU imported 300,000 tonnes of bananas from the Dominican Republic in 2012.
According to FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, these figures make the Dominican Republic one of the leading suppliers of bananas to the EU, while in 2000 the country had exported only 50,000 tons of bananas into the European Union.
For FAO, the banana sector in the Dominican Republic is not very structured, growers' groups are not organized and productivity is low. If industry increased coordination and collaboration, production could still be improved.
