South Africa has decided to suspend citrus exports to the European Union.
According to data announced at the last Southern African Fruit and Vegetable Association (SHAFFE) meeting, South Africa is the largest exporter of fresh fruit in the southern hemisphere.
For exports in 2016, according to SHAFFE, South Africa had an estimated 34%, Chile 31%, New Zealand 11%, Argentina 10%, Peru 8%, Australia 5% and Uruguay 1%.
This ranking was unveiled just days before South Africa's decision to suspend citrus exports to the European Union for the rest of the year.
Threatened by a volume restriction, because of CBS (Citrus Black Spot) potentially dangerous for European orchards, South Africa has taken the lead and voluntarily limits its exports. The aim of this decision is to guarantee her access to the EU market for the next season.
South Africa has shipped 116.4 million cartons (15Kg) of citrus fruit this year and is forecasting a final result of 122.7 million cartons.
