Turkey

This operation is carried out within the framework of the biotechnology project set up by the Municipality of Mersin, one of the main fruit and vegetable producing areas of Turkey, with the cooperation of the university, the departmental department of agricultural products and Forestry Research Institute of Adana and the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers.
The Mediterranean fruit fly annually destroys tons and tons of fruits, such as citrus fruit and peaches, preventing the export of affected fruit and resulting in a significant loss of income for producers and exporters.
Information seminars have trained more than 1,500 producers in 42 production areas to make effective the control of this insect, in particular with the setting of traps. These pilot areas will serve as an example for other producers to encourage them to use less harmful methods to protect their orchards.
