Almeria consolidates its position as Europe's main lettuce exporter in January
VU
Iceberg lettuce remains the most popular variety.
Almeria not only stands out for its excellent tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, but also for offering Europe products grown outdoors. At this time of the year, lettuce takes on a special role, ideal after the usual gastronomic excesses of the Christmas holidays.
Despite the serious water problems facing irrigation in eastern Almeria, towns such as Pulpí and Huércal Overa have managed to become the main export points in Europe. The region's favorable climate, combined with many hours of sunshine, creates the perfect conditions for lettuce cultivation. Well-known companies such as Agrupapulpí, Cuadrispania and Primaflor are leading this activity in the area.
According to a local media, in this first month of the year, Almeria has managed to market 70% of the lettuce consumed in Europe. The surface destined to this crop reaches 6,465 hectares in the open air, which is equivalent to 65% of the Andalusian total, according to information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Andalusian Regional Government.
The market shows a clear trend towards diversification, although iceberg lettuce is still the most popular variety. In addition, Almeria plays an important role in the production of endive, which is in great demand in Europe.
