Organic trade between Mexico and the United States has reached record levels in 2023, according to the most recent report from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service.
US organic exports to Mexico reached a record $234 million in 2023, according to the source, while Mexico's organic exports to the US in 2023 exceeded $1.4 billion.
Top US organic exports to Mexico during the year under review included apples, grapes, pears, spinach and lettuce. On the Mexican side, the most shipped products were avocados, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and tomatoes.
According to the report, Mexico focuses on the US and Canadian markets for the sale of its organic products, taking advantage of the proximity and efficient transport channels, despite having multiple free trade agreements with other nations.
In 2023, the area of organic production in Mexico was 571,608 ha, divided into 60% for harvesting and 40% for agricultural production.
The growth of organic crop area in Mexico between 2022 and 2023 was especially noticeable in fruits such as oranges (from 16,668 to 20,943 ha), mangoes (from 13,598 to 16,506 ha) and lemons (from 5,068 to 6,266 ha), although it decreased in other organic products during the same period.
