Uruguay wants to continue to diversify its markets
FJ
The success in 2014 for the diversification of citrus markets will continue.
The Ministry of Agriculture welcomes the reduction of the EU vis- à-vis dependence. Uruguay which had concentrated to 85% of its citrus exports to the EU in 2014 has managed to bring them to only 57 %. The Ministry stresses that efforts in this direction will continue in 2015 .
Next year the country will also continue its varietal conversion process. The citrus industry in Uruguay count 7.2 million plants but nearly half (3 million) are carriers of varieties that are no longer required by the markets.
The goal now is to build on the preferred varieties by consumers all over the world : seedless , nice color , easy to peel. Consumer demands have changed production must change. This is the great challenge for 2015 .
