Egypt threatens to take retaliatory action against Russia if the import ban on potatoes persists.
Egypt, a leading world exporters of potatoes, wants Russia to stop its import ban on Egyptian potatoes saying that the ban is not justified. The Egyptian trade minister is threatening to take retaliatory measures against Russian exports, according to Mena News Agency.
Russia has restricted its imports from Egypt since June 3, 2011 citing health concerns after the discovery of "
hazardous agents" in Egyptian potatoes. These health problems persist according to Russia.
To lift the ban, Russia wants Egypt to export potatoes from fields where they are grown for EU member countries and permission for Russian inspectors to verify the entire chain of production for potatoes in the country.
