High temperatures in the 2023/24 season affected mango production in Peru and Ecuador, which has led Brazil to increase its mango exports.
Carlos Iván Vílchez Peralta, president of the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM), emphasised the importance of keeping an eye on Brazil, as it is expanding its presence in Europe, offering competition with more attractive prices.
The growth of Brazilian mango exports to Europe has been noticeable in the last three years, with a significant increase in the volume shipped during weeks 7, 8 and 9. This represents a challenge for Peruvian and Ecuadorian producers, as Brazil is taking advantage of commercial opportunities on the European continent.
As for the US market, Mexico, as the world's leading mango producer, has been directing its supply towards this destination since the beginning of February. This has led Peru to focus on the European market, but now with Brazil's growing presence in Europe, there is greater competition in this market.
Vílchez Peralta stressed the importance of maintaining high quality standards in order to remain competitive internationally. He stressed that quality must be the priority, as poor quality mangoes affect the reputation of producers and can result in the loss of market share to other competitors.
As for the coming season, close collaboration between industry and farmers is needed to address the current challenges. Vílchez Peralta called on the authorities to support the agricultural sector, especially in the Piura region, where mango has been severely affected. Measures are needed to improve quality and productivity, as well as to face the climatic and phytosanitary challenges affecting mango production in the region.
