Huelva red berries: Planted areas increase slightly

It is still the strawberry which is most widely planted among the red fruits but the blueberries have progressed too (+ 7%).
The planting phase was completed in the province of Huelva, the area planted with red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) totaled 11 464 hectares for this season 2018/19. An increase of 2.80% compared to the 11 145 hectares of the previous season.
FRESHUELVA, the association of strawberry producers and exporters in Huelva, indicated that, according to the data provided by the associated companies, the areas planted with strawberries would have increased by 3.50%. With this season 6 095 hectares in total (5 890 hectares last year).
For raspberries, the area planted is 2,150 hectares, a decrease of 3% compared to 2,212 hectares of the previous season.
For blueberries, the area planted reached 3,059 hectares, or + 7% compared to 2,858 hectares last season. For blackberries, the planted area reaches 160 hectares.
FRESHUELVA pointed out that these data show that the commitment to crop diversification, initiated in previous seasons, is consolidating, thus ensuring the presence of bays in Huelva on the markets for almost 9 months a year.
