The delay in local production obliges Pakistan to import tomatoes.
Pakistan has started to import tomatoes from Iran. The country turned to Iran, because the tomatoes of its neighbor, India, are more expensive. Thus, according to a trader of wholesale market of Karachi, the Iranian tomatoes are sold between 70-80 Rs /kg while Indian tomatoes are between 100 to 110 Rs/kg.
But the trader said that the difference in price is justified by the difference of the quality. According to him, the tomatoes came from Iran are of lower quality because their trip took 4-5 days to reach Karachi, while Indian tomatoes are on the market in 2-3 days.
The local production, which had been delayed and expected for the 15th of November on the wholesale market of Karachi, will begin to arrive from the first week of December.
