Asparagus harvest began

The "Asparagus Farmers" began to digg out first king vegetable this year. The information was submitted by Rhine Agriculture Union (RLV). Asparagus is in Germany No 1 on vegetable market. Only in North-Rhine-Westfalen the asparagus was planted on 4000 hectares by 500 farmers.In Rheinland 270 farms planted asparagus on 1300 hectares. Asparagus is one of the most favourite vegetable in Germany. Statistical citizen of Germany eat in saison 1,25 kg asparus on average what makes Germany Europe-champion in consumption of this vegetable. The cultivation area of asparagus also underline the german leadership in production with 82 000 tons in 2006. As it comes from the information of the Union (RLV) all consumers in Rheinland can find home produced asparagus in this week. In such regions as Düsseldorf,Köln, Bonn as well as in Low-Rhineland, majority of asparagus will be offered directly from farmers. High time for harvesting asparagus takes place end of May and beginning of June - the end of asparagus fiesta in Germany comes on eve on St John's day (24th of June).
