Central and Southern parts of the country are the main areas of production.
After nine years of effort, Imports of dragons fruits from Taïwan to Japan is now allowed .
Over the past ten years, dragon fruit has emerged as one of most popular fruit species in Taiwan.
Dragon fruit has great market potential, but it has to pass rigorous quarantine checks before it can be exported to Japan.
In 2001, the quarantine bureau managed to develop a special dragon fruit disinfection technology and in 2003 developed a high-temperature steaming technology to kill fruit flies on dragon fruit.
"We then filed an application with Japan in 2004 for dragon fruit exports and finally passed Japan's stringent quarantine examinations this year" said Ko Wen-Chu, section chief at the COA’s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.
Taiwan has also applied to Japan for permission to export star fruit, cantaloupe, guava, pears and Indian dates. However, Japan has not yet achieved those applications adding that they are now developing disinfection technologies for bell fruit and pineapple-custard apple.
