According to the latest report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, US Department of Agriculture, Florida orange production is expected to maintain the previously announced volume.
In the latest report for May, orange production in Florida for this 2020/21 season is expected to hold steady at 51.7 million cases (90 pound / 40.8kg). This volume of 51.7 million cases was reported in April, when forecasts were for a month-over-month decline of 7% for orange production in Florida to reach 51.7 million cases instead of the 55.5 million cases planned earlier.
This May report also indicates a decrease of 100,000 cases for grapefruit production which is expected to reach 4.2 million cases (90 pound / 40.8kg). The production of other citrus fruits (mandarins, tangelo) is expected to decrease slightly from 950,000 cases previously planned to 900,000 cases (90 pound / 40.8kg).
For this 2020/21 season the initial harvest estimates provided for 57.0 million cases for the production of oranges and 4.50 million cases for the production of grapefruits as well as 1.10 million cases for the production of tangerine and of tangelo.
In Florida, the problem of citrus greening remains the major concern of producers who are working to improve production by investing in research to overcome this challenge.
