The Swedish company IKEA is testing the container salad culture outside its stores in Malmö and Helsingborg. The first harvest has just taken place.
Ikea in collaboration with Bonbio, a specialist in circular crop, has launched this test which will last 1 year. Containers have been installed outside the Malmö and Helsingborg stores. Inside, 4 floors of high-tech culture and circular cycle, where nutrients are extracted from organic waste, including food waste from Ikea restaurants.
Hydroponics, the roots of salads grow in the water with liquid nutrients. The crop takes place in a closed environment with no pesticide necessary. Permanent control of parameters for growth: temperature, light, water, nutrients, carbon dioxide content.
The first harvested salads were served in the staff restaurant but the company hopes to soon offer the product to customers.
