Report from Tony in Cairo.
The UPEHC : union of producers of Egypt has been founded in 1970. Today, it brings together 3,500 members whose 20% are exporters of fruit & vegetables.
North of the country is an area where most of the production is fruit: grapes, strawberries and citrus. There are also some vegetables including beans, mange tout, potatoes, and artichokes.
South is specialised in onions, and early grapes as harvest is coming 2 weeks before the north.
The main mission of UPEHC is to assist small-sized producers. Today the management team of the association has two priorities:
- to organise a new share of the land in the North in order to ameliorate water-feeding,
- to set up packing stations, and to enable small sized operators to use them to boost their development.
The show HortiEgypt is therefore a window open to the world to promote Egyptian production and also to attract equipment specialist in growing Egypt.
