Vegetable production allows Quebec to be a net exporter

The production of field vegetables is a growing sector in Quebec, which is now a net exporter.
The province of Quebec saw its field vegetable production clearly increase between 2006 and 2016, with a 74% increase in cash receipts over the 10 years.
According to a study by MAPAQ, the Ministry of Agriculture, Quebec is the main producer in Canada, generating 43% of the value of sales and exploiting 40% of the area dedicated to the growing of fresh vegetables in the country (the " Ontario accounts for 38% of Canadian sales and grows 42% of the acreage). The main vegetables produced in Quebec are lettuce, onion, carrot, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
Between 2006 and 2016 Quebec's vegetable exports grew by 9% per year in value and increased from 116 000 tons to 203 000 tons. Volumes of sweet potato exported recorded an average annual growth rate of 76%. Between 2006 and 2016, imports of vegetables decreased from 147 000 tons to 122 000 tons.
Thus, these 2016 results show that Quebec is a net exporter of fresh vegetables.
