China opens its market to fresh Cambodian mangoes

After the free trade agreement signed last year, negotiations and technical assessment visits, China has just approved the import of fresh mangoes from Cambodia.

 

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, mango exports are expected to climb dramatically. GACC, the General Administration of Customs of China, has officially approved 5 mango processing sites and 37 plantations.

 

Last month, technical visits took place to assess several farms and processing sites. Recent improvements at these sites have enabled the fruits to meet Chinese phytosanitary requirements. Technologies used include water heat treatment and steam heat treatment to effectively sanitize the fruit.

 

After the opening of the South Korean market last year, the opening of the Chinese market is a new opportunity for Cambodian producers.

 

In 2020 Cambodia exported 945,274 tonnes of fresh mangoes to the European Union, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. For a value of approximately 473.2 million USD.
