The list of possible uses of pineapple waste is growing with this last discovered property: its thermal insulation power.
The best thermal insulation are pineapple. Asian researchers working on the processing of by-products (leaves, peelings ...) of pineapple production have discovered an unsuspected property until now.
Pineapples account for about 20% of the world's tropical fruit production, with more than 25 million tonnes harvested each year but more than half of these 25 million tonnes are waste (leaves, peels ...).
Engineers from Singapore and Vietnam, working on the transformation of waste and by-products of pineapple production, have succeeded in developing a compound that is light, flexible and more than 96% porous. Properties that make it an ideal insulating material against heat and noise.
Temperature control tests for cold and hot liquids have shown that this compound retains temperatures much better. According to researchers the compound has provided thermal insulation 3 times higher than available commercially solutions.
