Gloomy outlook for Huelva strawberries
MD
The crop of Huelva strawberries this season will be much worse than expected.
Falling yields and falling prices characterise the season, which began almost a month late because of bad weather. It will end soon and not be remembered.
Good harvests in France have led to a significant drop in demand for Spanish strawberries leading to falling prices. The COAG association considers that the cost of producing a kilogram of strawberries is about 0.85 to 0.90 cents. The market price of 0.75 € underlines the problem of profitability.
The price recorded at the finish is almost the same as previous years. Farmers have been faced with rising production costs (plastics, fertilizers, pesticides, packaging, transportation, oil, electricity and labour).
Many producers were hoping that this campaign would be successful but lower demand and prices have ruined their hopes. And most are already thinking about next season.
