Davao City, on the island of Mindanao, is the largest city in the Philippines with an area of 2,443.61 km2. Agriculture is the dominant sector in this city which is home to many plantations (bananas, coffee, pineapple...)
A CAgro (City Agriculturist Office) official pointed out in a radio interview that the local government is keen to develop durian crops, to increase the current production figures and take advantage of the huge demand for this fruit, especially in China.
Based on 2021 data, durian crops cover about 3,388 hectares of land and production reaches 12,929 tons.
The head of CAgro clarified that the 'Puyat' variety will be favored because of its export potential and that all interested farmers will be able to receive the necessary aid. Free seminars will be held in all districts along with free training on durian planting and advanced cultivation techniques.
