Peruvian fruit exports to Japan reached a record US$68 million at the end of 2023, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur). This remarkable increase is mainly due to the introduction of fresh Peruvian grapes in the Japanese market and an increase in avocado sales, both fresh and frozen.
Peru exported 2,200 metric tons of grapes to Japan, generating US$8 million in revenues, after complying with strict sanitary requirements, according to the Peru-Japan Bilateral Trade Report, prepared by Mincetur's Directorate of Research and Economic Studies.
Thanks to trade agreements such as the Peru-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), these grapes enter the Japanese market without tariffs during certain seasons.
By the end of 2023, Peru accounted for 5% of total grape imports into Japan, competing with major suppliers such as Chile, the United States and Australia. In January of that year, Peru reached a 43% share of the grape export market to Japan, compared to 57% for Chile, both being the only exporters of this fruit to Japan in that period.
